Episode 21 of Astro Musical Interactions was recorded live on the evening of the Leo New Moon Solar Eclipse in session with the Tauranga Ecstatic Dance Collective. The collaboration features musician ALICE SEA ( handpan / flute / vocals ) and is a delicious example of what happens when musicians meet in performance for the first time.
All ears. Eye’s closed. Dance in the Eclipse.
On August 13 at 5:36amNZT there was a new moon in Leo. The South Node of the Moon was within a 9 degree orb creating a full solar eclipse, which was not visible here in Aotearoa but we were be aware of the symbology being evoked in the collective consciousness of the planet.
Two weeks later on August 28th at 4:18pmNZT the Moon at 4 Pisces receives the full illuminating light of the Sun just 5 degrees off the nodal axis with the north node at the anaretic degree of Aquarius.
Eclipses occur when the nodes are within 14 degrees of the lunations, and this happens usually 4 times per year in 2x ‘sets’ of a full moon and a new moon each.
Between the eclipses is a period of time known as the ‘eclipse window’ and for about a week before the first eclipse and after the last one there is a period we can think of as an extended portal of time where eclipse energy runs rampant.
According Chris Brennan of the Astrology Podcast eclipses bring significant beginnings and endings in the area of our natal chart they fall. So this August we look first at the Leo / Aquarius houses and then the Virgo / Pisces houses of our personal birth charts.
These signs are adjacent, so it’s like a hand over from one area life changes to another. When they move though houses that contain our Sun, Moon or angles, personal planets, Chiron or other points of tender fragility we can experience more extreme outcomes. If the eclipses move through houses of annual profection in a certain year likewise there can be much more noticeable consequences.
The nodes move clockwise while everything else in the chart moves anti-clockwise. They spend about 18months in each sign and infuse a mirroring energy and awareness where ever they go. They bring up shadows, they interrupt our carefully laid illusions and delusions.
SO WHAT?
Through Astrology we can see into a deep layer of our personal psyche. Rather than a modality for prediction, think of it as a vehicle for courageous honesty and self discovery. We can investigate our patterned behaviours and our habitual responses to things. We learn where we are selling ourselves short and limiting what is possible by leaning into our fears and the animal need for security.
That’s all well and good when we really need nurturing, but once we have spent some time in therapy, or what ever, many of us are ready to face up to a few self truths and do some work on changing the things that haven’t been working.
That’s when we can work with Eclipse energy consciously, because this is a time of significant beginnings and endings remember? So things are changing anyway, we might as well participate.
HOW DO WE DANCE THE ECLIPSE?
What does it mean to work with Eclipse energy consciously?
The first part of this is to be aware that it is happening and to feel the expansive quality of the opening. There may be some excitement, a feeling of new possibilities on a situation that is feeling stale. Or perhaps it appears as a kind of dread as the realisation that something that is not working like a relationship or a job needs to change it’s form.
Noticing the energy is the first part, and becoming aware of the need for change, or the desire for change. Sometimes that might feel like a sense of boredom and depression that desperately wants to change.
How much do you want that sense of boredom to change?
Enough to do something about it? Eventually you will feel so weighed down by the need for change that you will take a step. This may be an organised, well thought out step, but sometimes the recognition that change needs to take place, and is possible, outweighs our ability for clear thinking. Sometimes we just make those steps towards the unknown and see where we end up.
This can happen when meeting new and exciting people, when going on a travelling adventure, starting a new study course or job, or even just going out to a different venue, or gym or walking home a different way.
The pull towards the new will call you, it will demand that you listen in relation to how stuck you feel, If you’re not feeling stuck, perhaps that desire for change is not so strong, you might be already working on a path that is fresh and live.
For some of us there are times in life where the desire for adventure is very loud, and eclipses can usher in this fresh energy.
So the first step is to be aware of that part of life that wants to change, and to open the door of the heart that has become bored, and look around with fresh eyes to the people and situation around us. Open your eyes, open your heart and notice.
